2/13/09 Lecture 8: Mechanism of evolution 2: Gene flow Gene pool- refers to the total complement of genes and allelic variants in a population Gene flow- mixes gene pools through the exchange of genes through populations Gene flow occurs through: - 1. Migration(or hybridization) Pop1<>Pop2 - 2. Hybridization Pop1+Pop2=hybrid - Gene flow is the natural consequence of mating practices - Humans mating practices are culturally defined (marriage) To marry or not to marry (Darwin’s logic) Not marry: - No children (expensive and anxiety) - Freedom - Conversation w/ clever men at club - Not forced to meet relatives Marry - Children - Constant companion - Object to be halved and play with - Good for health - Better than a dog Exogamy- marrying outside your group, defined culturally - Ex. Mate exchange, develop into mating network Advantages of Exogamy - Social Alliance> genetic exchange - Genetic exchange> spreads beneficial mutations, increases
