Chapter 2 – Culture1.Define the termsindividualistic & collectivistic culture.Choose a character orthat illustrates both types of cultures. Then choose a scene or scenes that demonstratesthe character (s) being part of both cultures. Discuss in your analysis how the character(s) behavior in these two cultures shape their identity and communicate with others.Add in analysis how others perceive the character (s) behavior as individualistic and orcollectivistic (i.e. positive, negative, in – group, out – group).NOTE: In your analysis of the character or characters be sure to use the words in thedefinitions of the terms as a way of explaining your reasoning or opinion.Members of an Individualistic culture view their primary responsibility as helping themselves. They also tend to view themselves in terms of what they do, whereas people in collectivisticwhereas communicators in collectivistic culture feel loyalties and obligations to an in-group:one’s extended family, community, or even the organization one works for. They also likely todefine themselves in terms of group membership. In addition, Individualistic culture also arecharacterized by self-reliance and competition, whereas members of a collectivistic culture aremore attentive to and concerned with the opinions of significant others. The scene that Furious takes Trey and Ricky to Compton and tried to explain aboutgentrification illustrates collectivistic culture. Furious says the property value of Compton isbrought down on purpose by people outside of the black community, so they can buy the landcheaper and move people who originally live there out. In this scene, Furious insists that whatwe need to is keeping everything in our neighborhood black. He also mentioned why the blackcommunity has negative images. He explains that it’s because people from outside want themto destroy themselves. That’s why there so many gun shops and liquor stores in the blackcommunity. From what Furious say in this scene, I can say, Furious is a members of ancollectivistic culture because he define themselves in terms of group membership, which is theblack community in this case.He also uses the word “we” when he talks about gentrificationissue. That means he feel loyalties and obligation to an in-group.The scene where Doughboy, his gang and Tre are driving to find guys who kills Ricky forrevenge and while they are driving, Tre told them to let him out of the car is very interesting.
