You are not responsible for origins and insertions, but your knowledge of them will help you understand functions. Thorax: Muscles of respiration Intercostal mm are innervated by intercostals nerves; diaphragm is innervated by phrenic n. Muscle Origin Insertion Function External Intercostals Inferior margins of ribs 1–11 Superior margins of next lower rib (2–12) Inspiration: elevate and protract ribs Internal Intercostals Superior margin and costal cartilages of ribs 2–12; margin of sternum Inferior margin of next higher rib (1–11) Costal portion: forced expiration: depress ribs Sternal (inter-cartilaginous) portion: aides in elevating ribs durin inspiration Innermost intercostals Superomedial surface of ribs 2–12 Medial edge of next higher rib Presumed to follow internal intercostal actions of forced expiration Transverses Thoracis Posterior surface of sternal
