Objectives At the completion of this module you need to be able to Isolate any  system in question and draw a sketch of  it Show all the EXTERNAL Forces that act on the  system THIS SKILL IS VITAL FOR YOUR FOLLOW-ON  STATICS AND DYNAMICS CLASSES: ENGR 221, CVEN 305, MEEN 363-368 etc. etc.

The Free-Body Diagram The FBD is an extremely important and useful  concept for the analysis of problems in mechanics. FBD is a sketch that depicts the body under  consideration. On FBD, we show all of the external forces which act  on the body. FBD shows what we know about reactions (e.g., that  a certain reaction force has a known line of action)  before applying the equations of equilibrium.

Procedure for Construction cont. Steps for generating a  F ree  B ody  D iagram: 1) Isolate rigid body to analyze. 2) Draw isolated rigid body. 3) Identify the interface points (these are  points of interest:  (a) Center of mass (b) any point where  it was connected to the external world (c) any point where an  external force acts) 4) Identify forces at interfaces 5) Mark them on the FBD. 6) Mark axes 7) Mark dimensions (lengths, angles)

FBD Dos and Don’ts Do Draw only the outline of the  body in question. Draw  ALL  the  External  forces  on the body. Consider each external force  independently of ALL OTHER  forces on the FBD. Show the proper direction and  magnitude of an external  force  if it is  known.  Draw the coordinate axes.
