Problem Set 1 Key Questions: 1. A student in Griffth’s lab found three cell samples labeled A, B and C. Not knowing what each sample contained, the student decided to try injecting these samples into some of her mice, both singly and in combinations, to see if she could determine what each sample contained. She observed the responses of the infected mice after an incubation period and recovered blood samples from each test group to look for the possible presence of infecting cells. She recorded her observations in the table below. Assuming each sample contained only one thing in a pure form, what do your think was in samples A, B and C? Please explain your answer. sample injected response of mice type of cells recovered from the mice A dead live IIIS cells B none none C none few live IIR cells A + B dead live IIIS cells A + C dead live IIR and live IIIS B + C dead live IIIS cells A + B + C dead live IIIS cells Sample A must be the live IIIS bacterial cells because the mice die and live IIIS cells are isolated from the mice, sample B is the heat-killed IIIS cells because no cells are isolated from the mice and the mice live and sample C is the live IIR cells because a few live ones are isolated from the mice (they must have evaded the immune system). In addition, when samples A + C are injected into the mice, both live types of bacteria are isolated from the mice.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
