Mike McLennon Professor Bradley Simmons AAAS 99S-01 April 8, 2009 Banjo: Seed of Africa In Béla Fleck’s Throw Down Your Heart concert the multitalented virtuoso creates spectacular ensembles by fusing traditional American banjo playing with traditional folk music from five regions in Africa. The performance served not only to show the intercontinental diversity of music but the unity of music globally. While the diversity of music in Africa referenced by the Malian, Madagascan, South African, and Tanzanian styles of play was showcased in the performance, the perfect harmony witnessed in the joint performance with all of the artist portrayed the unity of music globally. In the first portion of the performance Béla expressed soul in intricate melodic phrase, picking the strings of his banjo with acoustic sonority. The artist also mastered keeping the audience on its toes with complex musical accents, ranging from dampened notes, which emphasized the rhythmic facets of each note, to piercing arpeggiated notes reminiscent of classical guitar styles.
