CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION: LEARNING TO CHANGE Learning – acquisition of info/skill; change of behavioral thought processes  Behavior – how we respond to our environment  *ex. See-and-say – behavior to pull lever; association between animal and  sound; manipulation of environment Inherited patterns of behavior (eg, modal action patterns) -reflexes, etc Classical Conditioning Operant Conditioning Observational Learning Change: - any species must be able to cope with change if it is to survive o natural selection o reflexes o modal action patterns (aka fixed action pattern) o general behavioral traits Natural Selection (Charles Darwin) - individuals with favorable characteristics are more likely to survive and  pass on their genes and therefore, future generations are more likely to  show these characteristics - these characteristics that contribute to survival are selected by the  environment
