How does this happen? What does this affect? Communication is about Creating Meaning 1. Comm is an object or thing a. Audio, record 2. Comm as a process a. Multiple parts 3. Comm as a lens (way of seeing the world)  a. Gives us different perspective  b. How we see the world depending on how we “angle” the lens i. Ex. Eskimos have over 100 ways to say “snow”  **Language enables us to see things but also limits our understanding as well Strategic Control  1. Tool for controlling environment (drawback)  2. Sees communicators as having multiple goals; one who chooses a strategy/strategies  that are appropriate for accomplishing multiple goals (focus) 3. Minimizes the importance of ethics; places strong emphasis on individual over  communities; over emphasizes role and power of individual to create meaning through  communication (drawback) 4. Court system (settings) Info Transfer o Sender transmits message to receiver o One-way; send/receive; Linear o Miscommunication  o Local – distortion – ambiguity  Transaction o Sender and receiver both transmit messages to each other o Verbal/ Nonverbal o People/ Interaction o Creation of shared meaning: o Leadership o Change management
