TELEVISION (con’t) 1950’s: Television euphoria 1960’s: Vietnam war was brought into people’s houses every evening Civil rights movement Mid-70s to 80s…role of satellites Importance of network structures 1970’s: every TV had a dish to pick up programming Local stations had mini dishes that would mount on trucks (news division); beam back programming and newsfeed (news vans!)…allow what they were filming to go back to the station Uplink: ground based transmission ends in downlink (ground based receiving dish) Uplink sends signal to satellites, satellites amplify and send back to downlink. Or satellite have transponder Satellites always in rotation with the earth (always in the same spot) People wanted to have channels dedicated to certain things…now over 500+ cable networks providing you with all kinds of information Broadcast television: networks that make programming available through frequencies and airwaves with antennas. 1970’s 90% people would be watching ABC/NBC/FOX/CBS
