Art Nouveau was the prevalent decorative style between 1890-1910. 2. What are the visual characteristics of art nouveau? The visual characteristics of Art Nouveau were the organic plant-like lines, whiplash curves, gentle flowing grace, vines and twisting stems, flowers, birds, and the female form. 3. Where and when did art nouveau begin? Art Nouveau began in 1895 in a Paris Art gallery owned by S. Bling 4. Meggs claims that art nouveau “unified decoration, structure, and intended function.” How was this different from Victorian design? This was different from Victorian design because it had more abstraction than copied nature. (Looking back vs. Looking forward) 5. How was it that the art nouveau style spread so quickly throughout Europe and to America? Artist were able to share ideas more easily and more frequently. Mass transport and Mass communication also contributed to the rapid spread. 6. What was Jules Chéret’s contribution to graphic design? What was his background? Jules Cheret was a Lithographer. Saw lithographs posters to replace typography letter press posters. Created woman illustrations called oreated. 7. What was Eugéne Grasset’s contribution to graphic design? What was his background? Eugene Grasset designed furniture, stainglass, textiles, and books. He had a background in water color line drawings and had a coloring book style. 8. What was The Studio ? The Studio was the first of nearly a dozen new European art periodicals that began in the 1890’s 9. What was Aubrey Beardsley’s contribution to graphic design? Why was he called the enfant terrible of art nouveau? Aubrey Beardsley had a striking pen line with vibrant black and white work. It was called enfant terrible because it was comprised of shocking exotic imagery. 10. What was Alphonse Mucha’s contribution to graphic design? Describe the women he illustrated. • 1 •
