REVIEW: Apoptosis – when cells self-destruct. Happens when things go wrong. A protease, P53, is released and slices up proteins & DNA – killing the cell!! What happens when this fails to stop cell division? *** A tumor develops!!

Science Headlines A Cancer Fighter Is Linked To Aging By Justin Gillis Washington Post Staff Writer A critical protein that protects animals from cancer in their early years appears, in later life , to cause much of the deterioration associated with aging, according to a provocative new study. The study suggests that the protein , known as p53 -- a central cog in the cancer-fighting machinery of many animals, including humans -- eventually shuts off the body's ability to renew its organs and tissues , producing bone and muscle deterioration and other hallmarks of aging.

The results , reported by scientists at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, "raise the shocking possibility that aging may be a side effect of the natural safeguards that protect us from cancer," two commentators said in an editorial accompanying the study, which appears today in the journal Nature.

Cancer Issues Cancer is uncontrolled cell division! -- Cancer kills > 500,000 Americans each year … and > 6 million worldwide!!!!! -- 40 % of Americans will contract cancer. Why is “cancer” a dreaded diagnosis? -- Because many can’t be cured. Why ? -- Most diseases are due to foreign organisms. Our bodies mobilize resources to kill them! What about cancer? Is cancer caused by a foreign organism? Usually not !! (Viruses cause some kinds of cancer.) -- With cancer, the body’s own mechanisms do the damage – cell division is out of control!!

Why does the body do this to itself? Something happens to the regulator (master) genes . Car analogy: accelerator and brakes 1) “Accelerator” = proto-oncogenes (promote cell division) 2) “Brakes” = repressor genes (stop cell division) Why does cancer develop? 1) Accelerator gets “stuck” Proto-oncogenes mutate to become oncogenes = genes that promote undirected cell division and aren’t turned off. 2) Repressor genes mutate and no longer turn cell division off. (Brakes don’t work!) In both cases , gene mutations are the problem!!!

Does a single gene mutation usually produce cancer? No!! It takes many mutations in our cells. Soooooo, why does cancer show up in humans later in life? ** The longer you live, the
