Purpose: To determine the empirical formula of the compound zinc iodine. Procedure: 1. Add 2g iodine crystals to evaporating dish and weigh them together 2. Take dish to hood 3. Add 5 mL of distilled water to the dish and stir 4. Add a few drops of 6M acetic acid 5. Weigh empty watch glass add 2g zinc to watch glass 6. Take to hood add zinc to iodine and water 7. Stir solution until clear 8. Decant solution 9. wash excess zinc in dish 3x with 1 mL of water and 6 M acetic acid (2 drops) 10. Dry zinc in drying oven for 15 min. 11. Allow to cool 12. weigh zinc 13. find mass that reacted 14. Calc. mole ratio of I:Zn 15. Determine Empirical Formula Results and Calculations: Mass of Beaker: 70.682 g Mass of Iodine + Test Tube + Beaker: 84.821 g Mass of Test Tube + Beaker: 81.987 g Mass of Iodine: 2.835 g Mass of Evaporating Dish: 43.653 g Mass of Zinc + Evaporating Dish (before heating): 46.180 g Mass of Zinc: 2.527 g
