African Story Telling Reading Notes September 21, 2008 Sikhuluma, the Boy Who Did Not Speak Pattern: chasing Birds, Killing Birds, and the birds flying back and forth. First time Sikhuluma speaks, he gives advice not to go into the homestead he says all the children will be killed. His younger brother calls him king. Mouse talks to him and mud talks to him. Mythical creatures water monster Sikhuluma warns sitshalotshalwana repeatedly and he is ignored because it s the first time he has spoken. All boys died they went in the homestead and the woman almost ate them. They walked on the road and they all died except Sikhuluma Sikhuluma wants the cloak made from the water monster or he will not come out of the circumcision hut until they bring the cloak. Pattern created by child and loaf of bread. He gets the cloak wont go in the house until he has a wife and he declares he wants a wife from Mongengadolo He went to get a wife listened to the mouse and had impossible tasks. Themes- Harmony between humans and nature, and rights of passage emphasize the
