Africaan Story Telling Reading Notes/ The Hero September 22, 2008 Notes on Hero- Stands against an ambiguous force and converts destructive capability to creative energy 1. Epic Hero- social or national level contains ideas and a future vision. He has great ambiguity and is able to lead the people from the past to the future( past and future both contain destruvtive and creative potential) hero may die in the process but not before he leads the people to the brink of the neww world. 2. Non Epic Tales- individual level also contain past and future elements the past must die as a character is transformed into a new world. The Heroic Pattern- every Hero has similar journey A. Familiar to unfamiliar, dangerous passage,struggle with the forces of the underworld, getting a elixer from a death dealing force, return to familiar forever changed, and the earth is changed as well in the process The Hero- A God/Man is born into society inorder to move society into its new dispensation. The new society is made in the image of this hero (god/man)
