Ellee Lazarov Med Gen I believe I have gained a lot from this class. Every presentation taught me very useful information about problems I will have to think about later in my life. I have chosen to review some of the information I have learned from the many presentations; Tay Sachs, Familial Dysautonomia, Crohn’s Disease, Gaucher Disease, Bloom Syndrome, Canavan’s Disease, Cystic Fibrosis, Fanconi Anemia, Niemann-Pick’s, Dystonia, and ML4 (Mucolipidosis type IV). I will only touch on some of the diseases but just enoughe to give you an idea of how much I took from this class. Canavans disease is one of a group of genetic disorders known as the leukodystrophies. This diseases causes imperfect growth or development of the myelin sheath; the fatty covering that acts as an insulator around nerve fibers in the brain. Canavan disease is caused by mutations in the gene for an enzyme called aspartoacylase. Children with this disease are characteristically quiet and apathetic. Although Canavan disease may occur in any ethnic group, it is more frequent among Ashkenazi Jews from eastern Poland, Lithuania, and western Russia.
