01/29/08 PLIR 365 I. Current Happenings A. Response to Obama’s reaching out. Iran- willing to believe in the new direction, but first US must apologize for their crimes against the Israeli people. B. Mossadegh Affair i. US overthrew a Prime Minister that wanted to bring radical change to Iran ii. First real CIA operation in the Middle East II. WWII’s changes A. Brought great global change B. Regional change i. British and French wanted to get out and were willing to give these countries independence ii. By 1946-7 there were free states in the area iii. Jordan still has military role with the British and Egypt even has a military base by the Suez Canal iv. Northern Africa fought with France for a long time A. After the first Israeli-Arab War i. Not peace, but a truce ii. Jordan occupied and annexed the West Bank in 1950. Not recognized by most countries in the world as legitimate iii. Egypt had claims to Gaza until the 1960s B. Jordan extended citizenship to Palestinians living in the West Bank & in Jordan i. First country to do so, most didn’t want them there at all ii. Not fully incorporated but they at least had a passport C. Tripartite Agreement of 1950 (US, UK, France) i. Trying to bring order to a very unordered region ii. Said that they would uphold a new status quo iii. No use made of the UN and the USSR was left out 1. Cold War was now underway and USSR was seen as the enemy 2. Said to the Soviet Union that the Middle East was the US
