01/22/09 PLCP 321 Geographical Influences on Russian Political Development 1. US, Western Europe, Japan and geography a. Technology is quite advanced and we have almost overcome any problems the environment caused b. During the Civil War Lincoln was receiving the most up-to-date battle status during the Battle of Gettysburg c. We now take for granted space and time 2. Russian Geography a. Cold and northern i. Very northern locale- comparable to Canada. Southern border is the 49 th parallel ii. Europe is also very northern, but the Gulf Stream moderates the climate- some of Russia is effected by this, like Murmansk. Russia has a very continental climate and any sea borders are mostly Artic waters. iii. Most severe climate in the world beside Mongolia. Very harsh winters and brutal summers b. Huge i. 11 time zones from east to west, US is only 4. Siberia is as big as the continental US ii. Russian Empire- 8,000-9,000 miles wide, 3,000 miles north to south iii. Problem of mastering space politically is much harder and much more important. Stories about exploration sound very much like space missions. c.
