Musical Influences: o Skiffle Grew up on it - equivalent of American Folk - Lonnie Donegan, washboard and washtub bass on up-tempo dance numbers o American RnR and R&B captured them - Eddie Cochran, Carl Perkins, Buddy Holly o Motown and Soul - drew inspiration o Main influence: ELVIS PRESLEY First white performer to let go of both personal inhibitions and past conservative styles o The Quarry Men: Johns first group - rooted in Skiffle but included Elvis songs (Baby, Lets Play House) in performances o Elvis's music, fashions, and performance techniques became the foundation, Without Elvis there would not be the Beatles o 1965: became enamored with Bob Dylan and Folk Rock "I'm a Loser" and "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" o East Indian on George Harrison: "The Inner Light" and "Within You Without You" o Soon pioneered psychedelic music along with Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead o Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - Beach Boys' Pet Sounds album and Frank Zappa's debut album Freak Out! = major influences o "Baby, You're a Rich Man" - influenced by the San Francisco scene o "When I'm Sixty-Four" and "Your Mother Should Know" - Paul's Swing style o Let It Be album: incorporated avant-garde sounds, symphony orchestras, brass bands, soul saxes, sound effects, and a return to their Rockabilly roots and old- time RnR 2. Instrumentation and Orchestration: o Healthy musical competition between John and Paul as to who got the A side of single but soon changed focus to albums o Rubber Soul: started making each album with a unique concept and created innovative and colorful packages including photos and printed lyrics o "Song segues" no pause between tracks and unifying musical themes or ideas throughout: Sgt. Pepper's and Magical Mystery Tour o Full Circle of evolution and change: started decade with guitars, bass and drums and then moved to adding woodwinds, horns, and strings in mid decade and ended decade with small band setup
