Elvis: o Jan. 8, 1935 born to Gladys Presley (had a twin brother that was stillborn) - small house East Tupelo, Mississippi. Stillborn named Jesse Garon, other was Elvis Aaron Presley. o 1938 - Father, Vernon, sentenced to Parchman Penitentiary for forging a check. o Was really close to his mother - strongest relationship with her than anyone else (including Memphis Mafia) o 11th birthday - parents gave him a guitar (Tupelo Hardware Store - $12.95) and Johnny Smith (Vernons brother) and Frank Smith (Assembly of God Pastor) gave him lessons. o Cut from football team because he would not trim sideburns or ducktail o Joined ROTC and spent spare time in the black section of town (Beale Street) o Grew up hearing 3 styles of music • Church - church • Country and western - radio • Black gospel styles - traveling tent shows that set up camp across the railroad tracks o When he moved to Memphis with family in 1948 he was exposed to R&B o Summer 1953: went to Sun Studios and recorded "My Happiness" and "That's When Your Heartaches Begin" as a birthday present for Gladys and cost $4.00 • The next year sam phillips signed him - released 5 singles. Moved to RCA and released "Heartbreak Hotel" in Jan 1956. o Army from 1958 to 1960 o Starred in 31 movies - mostly musicals and public persona transformed from rebellious rock n roller to wholesome family entertainer. o Married Priscilla Beaulieu on May 1, 1967 and nine months later Lisa Marie was born. • Elvis had many affairs including Nancy Sinatra (daughter of Frank) and actress Ann Margret. • Separated in 1972 and divorced in 1973 o During mid 70's he became increasingly isolated and battled an addiction to prescription drugs that took a toll on his appearance, health, and ability to perform. o Final live performance - June 26, 1977 in Indianapolis at Market Square Arena o Died August 16, 1977 2. The Beatles: o Young John Lennon: • Born in Liverpool on 10/9/1940 to sound of Hitler's blitzkrieg bombs • Mother Julia gave him middle name Winston Met and moved in with John "Bobby" Dykins after divorce. Sister Mimi showed up with social worker who gave John to his grandfather who put him in Mimi's care • Father Alfred, ship's steward, was gone during birth and spent most of war years at sea or AWOL. Left mother with no income so she lived at home with father, Pop Stanley, and sister Anne (Nanny) Returned home in 1944 but marriage was over in 1946 • John saw his mother occasionally because Mimi told him she lived far away (really only three miles). Had happy childhood and spent summers with Aunt Elizabeth (Mater) in Durness, Scotland. Loved reading, writing stories and poems, and drawing....
