1. Rock Is: o Music: vocal, instrumental, soft, loud, acoustic, electric, cobbled together in a garage or generated on a computer. o "Its only Rock 'n Roll (But I like it) is the definition of rock o Rock VS Rock and Roll: Rock: the core style that coalesced in the years around 1970 and has remained largely unchanged since. Music by white performers or played in the style most associated with white performers. Often referred to as "rock and roll" or "hard rock" Rock = music of the mid-sixties and beyond Rock and Roll: music of the fifties from which rock evolved and the most characteristic form of rock music. o Rock Era: refers to the most inclusive understanding of rock. 2. Form in Rock: The Anatomy of a Rock Song: o Riffs: short, memorable, and easily retained melodic ideas that often come back several times during the course of a song. Can be sung or played. Repeated riffs (especially sung) serve as milestones in songs which typically stress main theme of song o Chorus / Refrain: Section of the song in which both words and music are repeated o Verse: sections in which the same melody is used for different parts of the lyrics.
