Lecture 2, Date: 01/15/09. Review : 5:30 PM, Monday, 101, Life Sciences. Notes: Ectotherms: boneyfish, crabs, shrimp. Endotherms: Penguins, humans, tuna, great white shark. Halophiles: Love High Salt. Valence: determines the number bonds. Electronegativity: - Measure of the attraction an atom has for electrons. - type of chemical bonds an element will form. Chemical Bond: Forces holding atoms together in molecules. Characterized as strong or weak depending on the energy required to make or break the bond. Strong Bond: o Covalent bonds involve sharing of electrons. Weak bond: Non covalent bonds: Ionic interactions- attraction of opposite charges. One atom donates an electron to another. H-bond between partially charged atoms. Valence Vs Valence Electrons Valence: no. of electrons needed to fill the outermost shell of an atom Valence electrons are the electrons contained in the outermost electron shell of an atom.
