John’s Lecture: Middle Class Dreams and Realities Identification Terms: Northern Vincent Peale Southern Manifesto Kitchen Debate Greensboro Levittown I. The “Kitchen Debate” 1959 A.Moscow had an expo with an American Modern kitchen on display. This became a basis for a debate among Nixon and Khrushchev 1.Nixon and Khrushchev: have discussion on kitchens they use this to express either the superiority of Communism or Capitalism a)Nixon tries to promote the superiority of American values through the kitchen (1)He is basically saying: What's great about america is that we have better kitchens, better washing machines, better everything, and it is all because of capitalism. Freedom in America means the freedom of consumerism not just a vague concept. Everyone can have anything in America. b)Khrushchev: is not phased what so ever by Nixon’s arguments (1)Khrushechev dismisses these things as vanities. Post War consumer Society II.POSTWAR ECONOMY: was “Built physically and ideologically on consumerism….shaped perception of values, desires and personal identities” III.Post War Economy A.World War II was over the country had just been through 1.10 year of a Depression 2.Followed by 5 years of a repression in World War II a)Americans were yearning to indulge their inner consumers B.There was a higher Standard of Living 1.Greater Spending Power(Pay and Credit) a)First credit cards 2.High Education-”G.I. Bill of Right” 3.Lower Unemployment 4.Shrinking Work Week C.Prior to World War II there were 1.debates over the New dEal are happening 2.debates over Labor and management: unions a)Now what? (1)“Growthism” menatality post war (a)The Tide is Rising i) Like a boat in rising water (1)They though If the economy is good everyone and everything is better off (b)Federal Responses that helped strengthen economy i) Permanent New Deal programs ii)Permanent Defense Spending (1)After World War II the Cold War (a)Regardless of war or not the US is spending a lot on military
