Physics 1A Winter 2008 Problem Set #3 1) A .22 rifle bullet, traveling at v = 350 m/s, strikes a large tree, which it penetrates to a depth of d = 0.130 m. The mass of the bullet is m =1.80 g. Assume a constant retarding force. a) How much time is required for the bullet to stop? b) What force, in Newtons, does the tree exert on the bullet? 2) Two blocks of equal mass (m1 = m2) are connected with strings and massless, frictionless pulleys as shown in the diagram. Find the acceleration of each block. 3) A w = 550-N physics student stands on a bathroom scale in an M= 850-kg (including the student) elevator that is supported by a cable. As the elevator starts moving the scale reads 450 N. a) Find the acceleration of the elevator (magnitude and direction). b) What is the acceleration if the scale reads 670 N? c) If the scale reads zero, should the student worry? Explain. d) What is the tension of the cable in parts (a) and (c)? 4)
