Physics 1A Winter 2008 Problem Set #4 1) A mass m 1 = 2.0 kg sitting on a turntable rotating about its center is connected by a massless string and pulley to a second mass m 2 = 1.0 kg hanging below the turntable. The coefficients of static and kinetic friction between m1 and the turntable are μ s = 0.4 and μ k = 0.2. It is found that there is a range of rotation speeds of the turntable where the mass m 2 is motionless, with the mass m 1 remaining at a radial position r o = 1.0 m. Find the minimum and maximum rotation speeds (in revolutions/s) where this occurs. 2) In most problems, the ropes, cords, or cables have so little mass compared to other objects in the problem that their mass can safely be neglected. But if the rope is the only object in the problem, then clearly its mass cannot be neglected. For example, suppose we have a clothesline attached to two poles. The clothesline has a mass m, and each end makes an angle θ with the horizon. What is the tension at the ends of the clothesline? What is the tension at the lowest point?
