Physics 1A Winter 2008 Problem Set #5 1) Two massless springs with spring constants k1 = 4.0 N/m and k2 = 6.0 N/m are welded together at point A in the diagram. A mass m = 1.0 kg that slides on a frictionless surface is incident on the springs with a velocity v 0 = 0.5 m/s. It hits a thin massless plate with a Velcro surface at the end of spring 2 and sticks to it. a) In terms of the spring constants k1 and k2, what is the effective spring constant k eff characterizing this two-spring system, i.e. what is the spring constant of the single spring that could replace these two and give the same motion of the mass? b) What is the maximum compression x max that the mass reaches from the initial equilibrium length of the springs? 2) A 3.20 kg block starts at rest and slides a distance d down a frictionless 30.0° incline, where it runs into a spring. The block slides an additional 20.5 cm before it is brought to rest momentarily by compressing the spring, whose spring constant k is 438 N/m.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
