Pullman’s Town -Company town - Rents and rules set by Pullman - Mandatory to live there - Workers went on strike when Pullman slashed wages(1894) - got national support from the railway unions - said the workers wouldn’t attach Pullman cars at railway stations - President Garfield – got his attorney general to stop the strike - Court orders the strike to stop b/c claim the mails r being stopped thus its interstate issue thus federal issue thus government can shut it down. - Violence erupts - Millitary gets involved and kills 6 strikers IN Re Debs (1895) - Goernment could forcibly remove any obsructions to commerce or the mails, either by military power - Violation of the Sherman anti-trust act to organize a strike- was a conspiracy - Effectively prohibited organized labor from using strikes to
