11/20 ( MISSED FIRST 30 MIN OF CLASS GET NOTES FROM SOMEONE) Thirteenth Amendment - basically said you cant force someone to work ( really need to get the rest of these notes) Black Codes - the 13 th didn’t talk about race - In south they pass laws saying that black people have to have a work contract other wise they r illegal Black Codes in Operation - Restore racial subordination - Quickly restore a labor force - Keep freedpeople from owning property - Keeping freedpeople as agricultural workers Enticement Laws - One employer could not entice a worker who had a contract with another employer - Enticement was an action for trespass with the employee as the property - Employer had a right to exclude other “users” of the employee’s labor White southerners are convinced that freedpeople with their freedom will freak out and just be savage people in society. Congressional Reconstruction - Civil Rights act of 1866 o Response to Black Codes - Fourteenth Amendment o Made freedpeople citizens ( overturned Scott) o
