How to Study Effectively! How to Study Effectively! “…   I know of  many of my friends who have to cram for test because of other homework  and tests or simply choose to wait until the last minute. I am not saying that i  think this is a good thing or the proper way to study but unfortunately that is  just how college seems to work. This is not how college works (effectively)! Who has finished reading Chapter 15? Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell? Ah-ha!?!? How you spend every minute of your life is the result of a choice of how to spend your time. If you are in conflict over NCAA games and your class preparation, you have procrastinated! If you procrastinate, you might have enough time left to memorize a bunch of facts … You might do OK in this class if you resort to memorization of facts alone, BUT I design exams to test your ability to synthesize the facts and to come to logical conclusions based on the concepts behind these facts. If you give your brain enough time, you will be able to think about the facts & concepts, and actually understand the principles I (and your other professors) are teaching in your college classes! These facts can “sink in” with the concepts into your subconscious, helping push you to the correct answer immediately without having to struggle to piece together all of the details logically after you first read an exam question ( blink ). This “sinking in” often can lead to an “Ah-ha!” moment, when you consciously recognize your subconscious understanding of a concept ( blink ed!). This level of understanding TAKES TIME! This can happen while you are in the shower, traveling in a car or bus, drifting off to sleep, or during an Ad. break in the B-Ball Game! But you must read the chapters early, and think about the concepts repeatedly.

Changing the midterm schedule now is not fair to those who have already made tradeoffs to balance their schedules to study for their midterm before Monday night. More importantly,
