February 6 , 2009 Lecture 11: Bluegrass Heyday Evolution: - continuation of the tradition, firmly entrenched - move toward folk -- blending in the folk revival - move toward rock and jazz and commercial success, fueled by television and Hollywood - new styles emerge (Newgrass as viable pop) - commercially viable styles, renewal of careers (Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, Rhonda Vincent, Nickel Creek, Dolly Parton, O Brother, etc.) Key Points: - Instrumentation changes - songs continue to mix and mingle from other genres - tokens: referencing and employing bluegrass becomes a defining marker of both authenticity and virtuosity - urban and festival music Country Gentlemen - formed July 4, 1957 in Washington, D.C. - "Classic" Members: Eddie Adcock (banjo), Charlie Waller (guitar and vocals), John Duffey (mandolin and vocals), Tom Gray (bass) "This Morning At Nine" (1963) - personnel are John Duffey (lead and mandolin), Charlie Waller
