COM 225 3-17-09 Factors Related to Attraction Propinquity Related to geographic closeness You will tend to be attracted to those you are around most often, and less attracted to those you are around less often (all other forces being equal) Strongest predictor of romantic attachment within organizations Similarity Research supports the idea that similarity increases attraction Thus, birds of a feather flock together (BOF Effect) 3 Qualifications to BOF Effect Perceived similarity does not equal actual similarity Only applies if it is a quality you like about yourself Different types of similarity influence attraction Described 3 basic types of similarity: o Attitude: very superficial tastes and preferences; favorite food, movies, music o Personality: a bit more enduring; it is dispositional characteristics; they are extra/introverted o Value: this is your morals and ethics; much more enduring; how you approach life Examined initial attraction and long-term attraction Attitude similarity was best predictor of initial attraction
