I. principles of American grievance procedures a. Management moves and the union grieves- Bethlehem steel case; compare to uk, where adherence to custom and practice and wildcats are the norm i. Negotiating written procedures for disputes that arise during negotiations. Grievance arbritation- provides a procdure for what happen if there is a dispute in the agreement. Ex; what happens if someone is disaplined such as firing someone. This puts the union in a central role in administering grievance. The structure is to have a step wise procedure. If person doesn’t like what happens they can complain to supervisor and then after that write a grievance which then parties structure what happens to complaint through steps. 4 steps each leads to higher levels of management. Ends with arbiritaiton, brought in who issues a binding award to settle grievance dispute. Its about the interpretation of the contract its not setting the terms of the contract. Sometimes there are permenant arbitrators or sometimes a list of them to choose from
