15:42 Civil Rights Act Expansive act covering voting, housing, employment, etc. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act  Before 1964 o No Federal statue prohibiting employment discrimination based on race,  color, religion, sex, or national origin Title VII changed this in 1964 o There are now many state level statues that cover additional “protected  classes” Coverage o Only applies to business with 15 employees or more o Employers, labor organizations, employment agencies o Employees, not independent contractors Protection o Prohibits discrimination because of race, color, religion, sex, or national  origin What is “discrimination”? o No statutory definition Section 703(a)(1): o It is unlawful for an employer “to fail or refuse to hire or to discharge any  individual, or otherwise to discriminate against any individual with respect
