MCO 120: Media and Society: Media Usage Diary Student Name:  Jenna Celsi   Semester (Season & Year): Spring 2018 The goal of this exercise is to learn more about your own media behavior in terms of how you use the media and how much you use them. For 5 days, you will keep a diary in which you log ALL of your media use. In order to keep track of mobile media use, you may consider installing a usage-tracking app. For iPhone and iPad, Moment is a good and free option. For Android, Quality Time is my suggested app. Feel free to remove these at the end of the assignment. You may also be able to get this information from the battery use information on your phone. (For iPhone/iPad go to Settings > Battery, then click on the small clock icon to the right to see time used.) Part of the assignment is to evaluate your mobile media usage, so tracking app usage is a required step in the process. Step 1: Estimate your Media Usage In order to have a consistent result for the assignment, you must record all times in hours and minutes. For example, 12 hours and 15 minutes would be recorded as 12:15. Traditional refers to the more “traditional” form of the medium, like a printed newspaper or magazine. Mobile use refers to smartphone or tablet access ONLY. If you access a medium on a laptop or desktop computer, include that time in the traditional category. Medium Estimated Traditional Use Estimated Mobile Use Books (Include E-readers in mobile) 01:00 00:00 Magazines 00:00 00:00 Newspapers 00:00 00:00 Radio 03:00 00:00 Music Recordings (include podcasts here) 04:00 10:25 Movies 03:45 00:00 Television 00:00 00:00 Internet 05:15 00:30 Social Media 00:10 10:00 Total 17:10 20:55 Average Daily Total* 03:42 04:10 *Divide your 5-day total by 5 for your average daily total.

Step 2: Log your Actual Usage For Traditional use, record the medium you used, when you used it, and what kind of material you were consuming (i.e., what show you were watching, which book you were reading, what social media network you were posting to) here. At the end of the 5 days, be sure to log the results from your smartphone time tracker as well.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
