What is religion?? -Unify people around a central ideal. -a system of beliefs -organized system of worship -strong belief in supernatural power or powers that control human destiny Cultural connotations- common experience (history traditions, actions, beliefs) Ethical connotations- common morality (what is and what is not wrong) Theological connotations- sacred powers the we worship… God is father, Mary is mother, Jesus is son) Mystical connotations- common questions that makes us who we are Characteristics of God -God exists whether who choose to believe it or whether we know it. -everything in this world is a reflection of God -the reason all creation exists which is exists through him and he has always and always will exist -free -one and whole -unchanging and unchangeable -all powerful all knowing -spirit son and father (three persons, one being) Abram/Abraham -God tells Abraham (abram) to leave his relatives and country in exchange for the promise of some land and a child (and descendents) -wife Sari (aka sarah)
