10-22-08 In a study of stereotype threat in sports, white participants performed better than black participants when they were told they were going to be judged on “sports intelligence”. When they were told they were going to be judged on “natural ability”, black participants outperformed the white participants. Stereotype Threat: Leadership Results: gave participants choice of either being the “leader” or the “problem-solver” Commercials primed stigmatized stereotypes about gender Leadership aspirations were undermined when: Women exposed to the gender-stereotyped commercials showed a stronger preference for the problem-solver role compared with the leader role, as compared with men in both groups and women in the neutral commercial condition. 116 participants: 58 male, 58 female They were randomly assigned to the original leadership description or the “safe” description. In one section of the study, the researchers added a “safety phrase” to leadership
