Carbon Dioxide Through Time We think that carbon dioxide and water vapor were two important components of the Earth’s atmosphere soon after planetary formation. We think these, and other gases, reached the atmosphere by outgassing from the Earth’s interior during volcanic eruptions. Most water vapor soon condensed to form early oceans.
