HIS 204 Fast Food Nation Chapter 6 Some of the problems facing cattle ranchers because of fast food chains encouraged consolidation in the meatpacking industry. Following impact has the consolidation of the meat packing industry such as rising land prices, stagnant beef prices, over supply of cattle, increased shipment of cattle, development pressure, taxes, health scares. Due to the change of market environments, Chicken Mcnugget introduced nation wide in 1983. McDonalds has become the 2 nd largest chicken purchaser in the United States as a result chicken surpassed beef in 1992. This change also impacted on the poultry industry because many ranchers now fear that their industry is deliberately being reorganized. The increase of demanding chicken breast caused the greatest economic difficulty for the small independent cattle ranchers and their poultry houses sit empty, the grower loses money. In addition, the suicide rate for ranchers and farmers are high compare with the rate for national average.
