Psych 314 Lecture Notes  Feb.25 th , 2009 The World of a Person in the Health Care System: A Socio-communications Model Ch.8 – Using health service Personal Factors: - individual difference in personality o hypochondriacs (someone who notices many symptoms that may or may  not be anything) o worriers - cultural differences (which diseases are more common in your culture; is it  custom to complain & tell people about your symptoms or not) - prior experience (may influence whether someone seeks medical attention or not) Symptom Experience: - attention differences, self/others - mood, positive/negative Contextual/Social Factors: - situation and context (boring if you are bored, you might notice something you  normally wouldn’t, stress interpret that as being sick) Individual Differences in Personality: - some people are consistently more likely to notice symptoms - hypochondriacs are worried that normal bodily symptoms are indicators of illness - neurotic (although don’t use health care system as often because don’t think it  will help) Personal Factors: - cultural differences: o Anglos report infrequent symptoms o Mexicans report frequently-occurring symptoms Symptom Experience: - attention differences: o those who focus on themselves (body, reactions, emotions) notice  symptoms quicker than those who focus on their environment & activities - mood:
