Eosc 270 Lecture Notes Feb.26 th , 2009 - carbon dioxide dissolves more easily in cold water therefore Southern Ocean is more  prone to acidification due to carbon dioxide Polar Ecosystems Lecture #3: Life-support system of Sub-Antarctic islands: Marine food web at the Prince Edward  Islands: - Marion & Prince Edward Islands located off the Antarctic (relatively small) - low temperatures year-round, huge rainfall (2m/year), gale force wind - volcanic origin therefore fine, black sand found on islands & a rich benthic community - land-based top predators: birds, seals  - off-shore feeders: 86% (penguins, seals, flying birds)   majority of animals must leave  island to feed - inshore feeders: 14% (penguins, petrels) - island mass effect
