Tutorial 2: plane stress and Mohr’s Circle 1. The figure depicts an element subjected to direct stresses and shear stresses. Calculate the principal stresses and principle planes. Prove with Mohr’s circle method. Answer: +9.8; -5.8; 20 o 2. For the element shown, find from first principle:- i) the principle stresses and the maximum shear stress ii) the orientation of the planes on which these stresses occur, indicating your answer with a suitable sketch. iii) the normal and shear stress acting on plane AA. Verify your results using Mohr’s stress circle. Answer: (i) -15 ± 46.1 MPa; 46.1 MPa (ii) -20.3 o ; 24.7 o (iii) -6.52 MPa; -45.3 MPa. 3. For each of the element shown, calculate the direct and shear stresses acting on the indicated planes. Also determine the maximum principle stress and maximum shear stress in each case. Attempt this question using graphical method. Answer: for case (A): 85 MPa, 10 MPa;15 MPa, -10 MPa; 86.4 MPa, 13.6 MPa, 36.4 MPa; for case(B): -58.6 MPa, 3.5 MPa,; -16.4 MPa, -3.5 MPa; -16.1 MPa, -58.9
