ARLT 100g Masters of Power: 10 Ancient Lives Spring 2006 Notes on Mankiewicz’ Cleopatra Since the film is about 4 hours long, we’re going to skip the first hour (scenes 1-18) and pick up the film when Cleopatra comes to Rome in 46 BC at Julius Caesar’s invitation (scene 19). Below are some highlights from the section we’re skipping, and then highlights from the parts we’ll see. Key roles and actors include: Cleopatra (Elizabeth Taylor), Julius Ceasar (Rex Harrison), Mark Antony (Richard Burton), and Octavian (Roddy McDowall). The film was shot in London and Italy from 1960 – 1963, when it opened in New York after long delays and at an unprecedented cost of $35 million . Scenes 1 -18 include : Battle of Pharsalus (48 BC): Caesar defeats Pompey; Caesar goes to Egypt Mark Antony is Caesar’s spokesman Caesar arrives in Alexandria on market day: he outwits the young king Ptolemy (Cleo’s brother). Egypt as a land of racial and sexual diversity. C. is presented with Pompey’s ring and head. Cleo arrives at Caesar’s palace as a “gift” rolled up inside a carpet.
