Oon 1 Ben Oon Mrs. Roe English III AP 19 July 2014 Scarcity: Not Scarce in Reality Mullainathan and Shafir discussed numerous topics that interested me, and all these topics share a connection to scarcity. These ideas that they discuss, such as “bandwidth tax,” “tunneling,” and “focus dividend” intertwine within one another as they all tie back to scarcity. I especially found their examples to be captivating: Mullainathan and Shafir utilize real-world scenarios and controlled studies to demonstrate their arguments. Revisiting these ideas, I thought about how easily these ideas can transfer to my own life. One specific example pertains to the spring of 2014, in which I had the looming date of June 7 constantly in my mind. I scheduled (along with my parents) that date to be when I would take the SAT Subject Test Math II. Scarcity played a vital factor in this particular event for two major reasons. One, I was pressured to prepare for the test itself. The only reason I would take a subject test this early in my high school career would be to perform well and reduce the clutter of tests in my future. The second reason that scarcity was pertinent, however, was that there was a
