Lecture 23 Objectives At the completion of the lecture and the assigned reading, the student should be able to: 1) Define the following terms [including what cell(s) the term applies to]: Hepatitis - inflammation of the liver Fecal- oral route - contaminated food/water Parenteral - other than intestine Blood/body fluids 2) Identify the main health concern associated with viral hepatitis (acute, chronic, etc.). Viral infection concern is usually chronic infection leading to cirrhosis and/or liver cancer 3) Recognize the significance of IgM isotype antibody, IgG isotype antibody, and viral Ag or nucleic acid (RNA or DNA) in general staging of viral infections by serology. IgM = current or recent acute infection & in newborn serum indicates congenital infection IgG = current or past infection and immunity (most cases) Positive test for viral Ag or detection of viral DNA/RNA indicate current infection 4) For HAV, HEV, HBV, HCV, and HDV, identify the mode of transmission, the incubation period, whether the disease is only acute or becomes chronic, what
