“The Wrath of Grendel”Lines 1-29SUMMARY: The narrator talks about Cain, which is a bible reference, and he says that these creatures are descendants of Cain. In addition, these descendants are forever banned from God’s Love and are always defeated. There is a monster who lives in complete darkness, and he growls in pain. While he growls in pain, warriors are singing God’s praises in the hall. Tone: Narrator’s perspective and how he talks about the bible and makes bible references about Cain and talks about the “good” and “bad”External Conflict: good warriors vs GrendelEC: supernatural creatures: goblins, demons, fiends, giantsLines 30-40SUMMARY: When it is nighttime, the monster comes out to the hall because it is curious about the warriors. Since the warriors were sleeping on the floor, it was very quiet. Therefore, the monster decided to have its own feast with the warriors. Grendel “smashes” 30 men into their beds. He then leaves a bloody trail from the men while walking back to his lair. Characterization: the narrator describes Grendel into this big scary monsterMood: the killing of the warriors creates a creepy and scary moodSymbolism: darkness is evil Lines 41-58SUMMARY: In the morning, the remaining men saw the massacre left by Grendel. Many men mournedthe passing of the dead warriors, especially the king, Hrothgar. Hrothgar says that this massacre might be the beginning of the monster’s killing spree. Grendel returns that same night to kill again. When Grendel comes to attack, he kills everyone except for the men who ran away. You can tell that Grendelis in control of Herot now. Symbolism: morning – safeness because Grendel comes out at nightSymbolism: gray morning – describes the morning as griefMetaphor: distance is safety – saying if they keep their distance then they will be safe from harm Lines 59-78SUMMARY: For 12 years, Herot remains empty as the warriors stay away because of the fear. The storyof the feud between Grendel and Hrothgar is beginning to leap the seas. There is no way to honorablewat to pay Grendel off because he does not want money or land. Grendel is stalking Hrothergar’s men all over. Grendel hides in the misty marshes, so no one lives to tell the tale of Grendel.
