Lecture 18 Objectives At the completion of the lecture and the assigned reading, the student should be able to: 1) Define the following terms [including what cell(s) the term applies to]: Hemolytic Disease of the Newborn (HDN) – mother Rh- and her immune sys sees the Rh+ RBC of baby as foreign 2) List the Pros and Cons of adaptive immunity and provide evidence for why the Pros outweigh the Cons. Pros – usually necessary to clear stealthy complex org (NOT minor pt), secondary responses rapid, protective, and long lasting, can recog transformed self and kill tumors. Cons – very slow (1 st encounter), very wasteful, dangerous (autoimmunity), can make inappropriate response 3) Recognize when a Th1 or a Th2 predominate response could be either appropriate or inappropriate for a given infection [categorizing the infections as: intracellular (cytosol), extracellular, or intracellular inside phagosome]. 4)
