Lecture 21 Objectives At the completion of the lecture and the assigned reading, the student should be able to: 1) Identify whether AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency syndrome) due to HIV infection is a primary or secondary immunodeficiency. 2) Identify whether HIV-1 or HIV-2 is more common in the U.S. HIV-1 is more common 3) State whether the incidence of HIV/AIDS has leveled off, declined, or is still increasing in that last 5 years. HIV infection still increasing 4) Identify the function of gp120 and gp41 in the interaction with host cell membranes and eventual infection of host cells. Gp120- small frag of gp160, (initial contact) forms knob protruding from the viral envelope and bind CD4 Gp41 – small frag of gp160, binds to CCR5 or CXCR4 to fuse w/ target cell mem and penetrate 5) Explain the difference between macrophage-tropic and lymphocyte-tropic HIV strains, and how they change over time during HIV infection of an individual. M0 tropic HIV strains gp41 bind CCR5 infect M0 and DC’s
