Khuyag 1 Introduction Historically, I have always had trouble with writing, whether it is with grammar issues or strong thesis statements. One important skill I retained from this class was proofreading carefully. By proofreading, I saw my mistakes which helped me become a better writer. There is an immense change between my first draft of the Imitation of The Waste Land and the final draft of my What is Style essay. Though I must still further my skills as an academic writer, this class certainly helped fix the common errors that hindered my ability to write. Throughout this course, I have improved my writing in several ways. In terms of minor issues, I learned to fix my grammar issues such as verb tense and article errors. On the other hand, I made sure that my thesis statements were clear and learned that it can be split into multiple sentences. Combining these lessons, I learned to be more direct with my thoughts. I was unconscious of how important verb tenses were until Dr. Danner pointed out how unnecessary shifts in tenses can cause confusion. After looking up Purdue’s handout on verb tense consistency, I learned that changes in verb tense can help the reader understand the various narrated events. However, if these shifts are executed properly, the essay may not be clear. Once Dr. Danner stressed the importance of this issue, I looked for shifts in verb tenses after I completed my essay. Proofreading the Preface to The Waste Land helped me be cautious for my final writing assignment, What is Style. In the second draft of the Preface, Dr. Danner pointed out that my
