(Hint: see anomic suicide) “Since the 1950s the suicide rate, or the percentage of people who die through suicide, has almost tripled for people between the ages of 15 and 24 in the US, becoming the third leading cause of death, behind accidents and homicides (Isaksen, 2013).” European scholars, to include Emile Durkheim, were highly interested in suicide. Those same scholars felt that the progression of society was responsible for the increase in suicides and suicidal ideations. “Durkheim himself referred to suicide as the "ransom money" of civilization (1897b:367) (Adams & Sydie, 2002).” He took an even greater interest in suicide when one of his close friends committed the act.
