PICOT STATEMENT AND LITERATURE SEARCH 2Picot Statement and Literature SearchThe PICOT question that is focused on this research is whether hand washing amonghealthcare workers can help to reduce hospital acquired infections (HAI) and the steps that canbe taken to ensure that patients do not acquire other diseases if they come to get medical help.There are thousands of infections and deaths that occur on a yearly basis due to the poor andunhygienic handling of patients from unhygienic methods. Therefore, to ensure that patients andthe healthcare workers do not get hospital acquired infections there are measures that need to beput in place to ensure compliance. According to Pincock et al (2012) nearly 100,000 deaths ofhospital acquired infections (HAI) and one million infections are reported annually in America.These staggering figures prove that this problem is bigger than what it is usually reported withthe problems arising due to ignorance, incompetence or the overworking of understaffed healthworkers who lose sight of ensuring health and safety compliance (Allegranzi, Conway, Larson,& Pittet,2014). World health Organization notes that hand washing is as essential asadministering and assisting the patient because most of the nosocomial diseases are as a resultpoor hygiene. Hygienic hand disinfection is the most recommended approach of ensuring that the handsare clean because it provides a better antimicrobial efficacy than using the common methods ofhandwashing with soap and water. Washing of hands should only happen when there is visiblesoiling but until then hand sanitizers should be used. Due to the prolonged use of gloves in the
