Cara Jones Artwork Analysis Art Appreciation 4/24/17 Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss The Austrian-born painter Gustav Klimt was a symbolist who was one of the most notable Artists in Vienna in the early 20th century. Gustav was born in 1862 and was one of seven children born to Ernst and Anna Klimt. Gustav and his two brothers all showed artistic abilities at a young age and his father was a gold engraver and his mother was aspiring to be a musical performer. The Klimt family lived in poverty for most of Gustav’s childhood as finding work was difficult for immigrants at this time. In

1876, Gustav enrolled in the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts and studied being an architectural painter. He studied there until 1883. Eventually Gustav’s brother Ernst enrolled in the school as well and he, Gustav, and their friend Franz Matsch formed a team that they called the “Company of Artists” and they worked together on projects. Klimt's professional career took off by painting interior murals and ceilings in large buildings although his early dream as an artist was to become an art teacher. While Gustav was still in school his talents earned him several small jobs. The following year, which was the most influential year for his artwork, Gustav went through the personal tragedy of the passing of his father and brother Ernst. Following their death, Klimt decided to disregard all of the formalities he was taught and opted for a more personal style. His new style revolved heavily around symbolism and various personal influences. With his new art taking off and his personal life coming to such a drastic change, the Company of Artists grew much harder to maintain. They were still doing business and getting mural painting jobs but Gustav began to surround himself with like minded artists and formed a new group called the Vienna Secession. The group did not
